Australian Pork Limited commissioned an investigation into the impact of the transportation of pigs over longer distances for slaughter in response to the rationalisation of the abattoir sector in Australia. As the distance between farm and abattoir increases, the industry must ensure that pig welfare in transit is not compromised. The survey found deaths in transit were lower than in previous surveys due to a number of factors including producers participating in the APIQ?® program, greater use of employees trained in the movement of pigs, use of the APL ‘Is It Fit to Load?’ Guide, and other contributing factors.
