Development of nutritional strategies to attenuate the impact of poor environments through down-regulation of eicosanoid mediators

Author(s): Dr Jae Kim

The purpose of this research was to determine if the dietary supplementation of boron, viatmin E and omega-3 fatty acids and their synergistic effects in the weaner and finisher diet will attenuate the impact of a poor environment.

Results showed that dietary inclusion of boron, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids singularly or in combination had limited impact on the indicators of intestinal health, inflammatory response and performance of pigs. However, a correlation analysis showed boron intake enhaced intestinal structure, reduced damage in the liver and increased the body weight of pigs, although these effects were not detectable in the treatment-based statistical analysis.

Further investigation into the inclusion level of boron in diets for weaner pigs may be required.
