Reducing Energy Costs in Piggeries

20 Pages

Author(s): Robyn Tucker, FSA Consulting

Energy is an important cost for pork production, with electricity and liquid and gas fuel prices in pig production areas rising by 25-40% over the past few years. Energy sourced primarily from limited fossil fuel reserves also has an environmental cost, contributing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere. Reducing energy use, choosing the best tariff and managing the power usage accordingly, and using alternative power sources can substantially improve the bottom line for both the piggery and the environment.

All piggeries use energy, however conventional piggeries have much higher energy usage than deep litter systems and outdoor piggeries. While the focus of this booklet is on conventional piggeries, parts apply to other housing types.
