High rates of pre-weaning mortality (>12%) are still commonplace in the Australian pork industry. This is an important issue impacting farm productivity and profitability, and a serious welfare issue. The average pig litter size in Denmark is 14.8 pigs born alive per litter. This poses challenges to pig farmers to minimise pre-weaning deaths. This session provided Australian pig producer’s access to well-known researcher Flemming Thorup (Pig Research Centre, Copenhagen) who presented “Achieving a high litter size and high piglet survival”. The day was successful as 40 people representing approximately 25,000 sows and their progeny attended and received useful information.
