Author(s): Jeremy Skuse, Lauren Hemsworth

This study aimed to develop reliable, practical and repeatable measures of animal welfare that can be used by individual farmers to benchmark their welfare status and show their improvement in animal welfare outcomes over time. This benchmarking tool ensures the Australian Pork Industry continues to remain at the forefront of international developments in animal welfare, maintain a high level of ethical standards and promote sound welfare practices. The piloted animal-based welfare indices and the recommended on-farm methodology modifications require validation before being declared as an on-site pig welfare benchmarking protocol suitable for Australian conditions. (Validation project was commissioned)
