Review of Growth Promotion Technologies

Australian Pork Limited commissioned this review to investigate emerging technologies and dietary additives that may be used to manipulate growth, body composition and meat quality in growing pigs. The study reviewed technologies including Immunisation against gonadotropin releasing factor (GnRF), exogenous porcine somatotropin (pST), Ractopamine, Cysteamine, dietary chromium, dietary betaine and dietary neuroleptics. It was concluded that research to develop a controlled delivery system for pST should continue as this technology is a promising method of improving feed efficiency and growth.
