This project investigated the antibody responses of Australian pigs to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines held for use in case of an FMD outbreak. FMD is one of the most infectious diseases affecting cloven hoofed ruminants and pigs. Australia is free of FMD but projections indicate a widespread outbreak could cause losses of up to $12 billion. Therefore Australia has invested in a vaccine bank containing antigens which can be used to formulate vaccine to ensure a strong immune response should there be an outbreak. This project has demonstrated the antigens can be formulated into successful vaccines that elicit immune responses in Australian pigs.
