This project provides a comprehensive analysis of the scientific literature on welfare measures and assessment methods to identify credible scientific measures that could be developed into a uniform field index (UFI). The results indicated there was no one comprehensive system, however research showed that assessments combining health and production data together with observation of behaviour and physical appearance of animals within a group offer reliable and feasible tools to assess welfare. The combination of the identified UFI and the proposed implementation process provide a tool to monitor, manage and provide evidence of welfare on livestock enterprises.
