Australian Pork Limited commissioned this project to determine the relationships between the two main approaches to welfare assessment, the functioning approach and the preference approach, and to establish reliable welfare standards and measurement tools. Restriction of a resource that animals are highly motivated to access led to disruption to biological function, such as occurrence of abnormal behaviour, increased stress and poor growth and health, indicating that approaches examining biological function and animal preferences provide the best current assessment of animal welfare.
