This study investigated the most sensitive detection method for identifying sick or injured gestating sows housed in stalls and groups on a commercial pig farm. Nine observation methods were utilised over a four-day period. The most efficient method to identify sick or injured sows in group-housing was by walking through their pens at the end of the feeding period and encouraging all sows to stand. The most efficient method to identify sick or injured sows in stall-housing was examining them from the back aisle during feeding time.
