97 Pages
1 Dec 0011
Author(s): Dr John Black, Prof John Pluske

Australian Pork Limited commissioned this review to identify nutritional, environmental, animal selection and other factors that may either reduce or enhance the capacity of the immune system of a pig to resist the impact of high microbial loads within many piggeries. This review identified factors that regulate the innate and adaptive immune system responses in pigs and the consequences of their manipulation on health and performance. Practical strategies for optimising the immune response and decreasing the adverse effects from disease, and areas needing adoption or further research are also proposed.
