The rationalisation of the abattoir sector has lead to longer transport distances, leading to perceived increase in welfare risk. Australian Pork commissioned this project to provide information to industry and counteract adverse comment regarding welfare in transit. This survey revealed lower deaths in transit when compared to last survey and other North American and EU countries proving the pig industry’s welfare Codes, QA (farm & abattoir) and Fit to Load guides are positive influencers.
