The aim of this project was to determine if Mycoplasma suis was present in a sample of commercial feeder pigs in Australia. M. suis is the causative agent of the disease known as porcine eperythrozoonosis (PE). This disease is also known as porcine infectious anaemia and results in low morbidity and high mortality across pig herds. The results, based on molecular detection techniques, confirmed M. suis to be present within Australia. Although the extent of its distribution is yet to be determined, it is likely that infections are sub-clinical or manifest as chronic, rather than acute disease.
