This project aimed to determine whether space provided per pig in group housing has an influence on welfare and/or production parameters. The study compared the effects of 1.4m2 and 2.8m2 space allowances during pregnancy and two parity groups (gilts versus parity 3 plus sows) on coping measures and standard production parameters. Minimal effect of space allowance and parity on the well-being measures evaluated were found. There was some evidence of improved reproduction in older parity sows provided with increased space allowance, however further research with a greater range of space allowances is needed.
