This project evaluated sow and litter performance in farrowing crates compared to non-crate systems reported in existing literature and identified gaps in knowledge to recommend how the Australian pig industry could proceed to adopt practical non-crate farrowing/lactation systems. The lack of consistency in reporting “good” findings was considered to suggest a lack of understanding of factor(s) within the “successful” farrowing systems that contribute to their success, such as the optimum pen design of non-crate systems.
