Claire Penniceard, owner and Sole Director of The Pig Pen Pty Ltd (a farm that grows out pigs on contract for one of Australia’s largest meat producers) visited Tasmanian producers to speak on her experiences with environmentally sustainable production. Claire discussed the world demand for food and the potential for pork on a world scale, managing grower pigs on deep litter, welfare issues, pig behaviour in shelters and consequent feeder/drinker configuration, and the use of grape marc as bedding. Feedback indicated that Claire’s practical, experienced-based advice had improved producer understanding and was beneficial.
