This project examined the effects of housing sows in groups, mixed either immediately after mating or 6 weeks post-mating and housed either with or without feeding stalls, to develop strategies to reliably reduce aggression and stress in group-housed sows. The main findings revealed that groups of 10 sows had consistently lower injuries throughout the experiment, sow welfare improved as floor space allowance increases and the effects of space were most pronounced early after grouping. Injuries were higher in groups with shoulder feeding stalls and stress was higher in groups with shoulder feeding stalls after mating.
