The Effects of Group Housing during Gestation on Sow Welfare and Reproduction

This project investigated the effects of housing sows in groups, and sought to determine the optimal spacing allowance and stocking rates. The results determined group sizes of between 10 and 80 does not affect reproduction, aggression or stress physiology, however a floor space allowance of 1.4m² was insufficient. Methods were identified to reduce aggression such as the use of barriers and appropriate staff training.
