Conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests detect Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the causal agent of porcine mycoplasmosis, by amplifying specific target DNA that can be demonstrated on a gel-based detection system to yield a specific-sized product. This project was a combined laboratory and field-based study to provide information and evaluate various PCR tests used to characterize the infection status of herds. The results highlight the most accurate, efficient and cost effective PCR tests and identify gaps in knowledge and inconsistent data to provide recommendations for future studies.
