APL commissioned this project to assess the value of an on-farm, team-building approach to knowledge transfer within the Australian pork industry through the creation of a ‘Target 25 team’ of experts to visit farms, observe their daily activities in managing their breeding herds and make recommendations to improve their performance. The Target 25 team targeted either farrowing rate and litter size (total born), or stillbirths and pre-weaning mortality. The Target 25 program made improvements to the farms farrowing rate and litter size (total born), although little benefit accrued from targeting stillbirth and pre-weaning mortality rate.
